Dryer Won't Start: Dead, Humming, Clicking, or Quitting
"Won't start" is four different failures wearing one coat, and they separate cleanly by what happens when you press Start. Listen first, test second.
Completely dead — no sound at all
The motor circuit never gets power. Work it in this order:
- Power. Breaker tripped? Plug fully seated? Gas dryers use an ordinary outlet — test it with a lamp. Electric dryers on 240V can lose a leg at a half-tripped breaker, though a fully dead dryer usually means no power at all.
- Thermal fuse. On many Whirlpool-built models the thermal fuse sits in the motor circuit, so a blown fuse means a silent dryer, not just a heatless one. Unplugged continuity test: OL = blown. And a blown fuse means the dryer overheated — fix the airflow cause too, or read our guide to a thermal fuse that keeps blowing.
- Door switch. The dryer won't run if it thinks the door is open. Test for continuity with the switch pressed (door closed position); none = failed. It's a $10–25 part, and on Samsung (dC/dE/dF) and LG (dE) a door code on the display is the same confession.
Humming, but the drum doesn't turn
The motor has power and can't rotate. Let go of Start — holding it cooks a stalled motor. Unplug and turn the drum by hand. Stiff or stuck: look for a jam — something in the blower wheel, an object at the drum edge. Spins almost too freely: the drive belt has likely snapped, and on models with a belt switch, a broken belt also cuts the start circuit. Turns normally by hand but only hums on Start: the motor or its start switch has failed, which is usually where a tech earns their fee.
Clicks or beeps, but won't start
The controls are alive and asking; something downstream isn't answering. Do the two free checks — close the door firmly (watch for a door code), and unplug for five minutes to reset the control — then the chain is unplugged continuity work: thermal fuse, door switch, start switch, belt switch, in that order.
Starts, then stops when you let go — or seconds later
On push-to-start models, the motor's centrifugal switch takes over once the drum is spinning; if it fails, the motor dies when you release the button. Early shutdowns also come from a slipping belt dropping the belt switch, or an idler pulley losing tension. Belt and idler first ($25–50 kits), motor switch after.
Safety, every time
Unplug the dryer before opening any panel or testing any part — every meter test in this guide is an unplugged test. On gas models, shut the gas supply before opening panels near the burner. Never bypass a thermal fuse, never work on a gas line or inside a sealed gas valve, and never treat live-voltage testing as a DIY step. Smell gas? Stop, leave, and call your gas utility or a licensed professional.
If the drum turns but there's no heat once it does start, switch trees: dryer not heating for the full checklist, or the gas-specific gas dryer no heat guide.
